Mr Selemani Jaffo, Deputy
Minister in the President's Office - Local Government and Regional
Administration
Dodoma — In a bid to improve learning environment and
improve quality education in public schools, the government has allocated
12.9bn/- for construction of latrines in both primary and secondary schools.
The Deputy
Minister in the President's Office - Local Government and Regional
Administration - Mr Selemani Jaffo, said yesterday in the National Assembly the
government is determined to ensuring that students learn in a conducive
environment.
He was
responding to Ms Amina Mollel (Special Seats - CCM), who sought to know how far
the government had implemented the education policy indicating that the ratio
of a pit latrine should be one to 20 and one to 25 for girls and boys
respectively.
The
minister said as for now, in primary schools, the ratio is one latrine to 52
and one to 54 for girls and boys and for secondary schools; the ratio is one to
23 and one to 25 for girls and boys respectively.
Mr Jaffo
noted that in this 2016/2017 financial year where the government has set aside
12.9bn/-, 8,791 latrines will be constructed for primary schools and another
1,942 are planned for secondary schools. "This campaign is collaboratively
implemented by the government, parents and education stakeholders.
Our goal
is to ensure all students and pupils in public schools enjoy better learning
environment," he said.
In her supplementary
question, the MP asked the government plans to construct school latrines which
are friendly to disabled persons, arguing a number of schools have unfriendly
infrastructures to them.
Mr Jaffo
said in the second phase, the government is planning to construct 945,000
latrines countrywide and people with disability will be considered.
